FACES IN THE CROWD

Holly Blatchford of Northbrook, Ill. tied for the national outdoor intermediate speed-skating title at the championships held on Lake Como, Minn. Earlier she, sister Sally and brother Neil made a family sweep of the Silver Skates Derby in Minneapolis.

Pat Cox, a freshman cross-country runner at the University of New Mexico, planned to enter the 880 at his school's first indoor dual meet, was switched at the last minute to the 1,000 and won it in 2:12.9, beating Oklahoma State's veteran John Perry on the last lap.

Betty Bates, wife of a Special Services sergeant, won the ladies title (91 x 100) at the Mid-Winter Skeet Championships held by the Pinehurst (N.C.) Gun Club. Mrs. Bates began shooting three years ago at Verdun, France, where her husband managed the skeet range.

Pat Miller, a high school skier from Mexico, Me., was named ski-meister at a Rumford, Me. winter carnival when he won the cross-country, placed third in the giant slalom, second in the jumping and 12th in the slalom. His brother Jim was second in the combined standings.

Dick Galloway, 16, of Zanesville, Ohio, who bowls in two leagues and averages 197 in each, rolled a three-game 761 on games of 227-255-279, a world record for sanctioned junior bowlers. Teammate Tom Ryan had set the record a week earlier with a 750.

Don Carlos, who last year as a freshman led Otterbein College to its best basketball record in history (16-5), this season was the Ohio Conference leader in points (360), scoring average (27.7) and field-goal percentage (56.7) after playing 13 of his team's 15 games.
