FACES IN THE CROWD

John Olagues, a sophomore right-hander at Tulane, struck out 20 batters as he pitched the Green Wave to a 7-0, one-hit victory over Mississippi. Olagues walked two men, struck out the side in order five times, and in one stretch got nine strikeouts in a row.

Diane Fournier of Rumford, Me. won the girls' junior Class I event, a mile-long, 38-gate giant slalom, at the Sugarloaf Schuss Ski Races in Kingfield, with a clocking of 85.6 seconds. Laurel Des-Roches, an Eastern Junior Alpine teammate, finished second.

Robert Batie, a senior at Waialua High in rural Oahu, Hawaii, ran 13 heat and final events in two track meets in three days and took six out of seven possible firsts. He also set Leeward Oahu High School meet records in three events and tied a state mark in the 100.

Ross Wales, a high school valedictorian swimming for the Youngstown YMCA Neptune Club in the Ohio High School Championships at Ohio State, set a new record of 52.2 in the 100-yard butterfly, bettering Don Schollander's scholastic mark by .2 seconds.

Paul Merrill, of Polk County (Fla.) Junior College, won his first major water-ski tournament, the Dixie International, when he jumped 147 feet—12 feet short of the world record—to defeat Joker Osborn, current Masters and national champion, for the overall title.

Jim Ploen of Bloomington, Minn. became 1965 world indoor archery champion when he won the Ben Pearson Open in Detroit. Ploen's 584 of a possible 600 points tied him with the defender, Bill Bednar, but Ploen took the title with the best individual round.
