FACES IN THE CROWD

David Jumper, home for vacation on the Big Cypress Seminole Reservation in the Everglades, hiked 20 miles to join his McArthur High (Hollywood, Fla.) team at the county track championships, then won the 880 and anchored the winning two-mile relay team.

Fred Marden, Brandeis University lefthander, struck out 26 Norwich batters in a 12-inning game that was called because of darkness at 3-3. Marden walked six men, gave up six hits, struck out 20 in the first nine innings and 12 of the last 15 batters he faced.

Linda Metheny, 17, of Tuscola (Ill.) High School won the first major title of her five-year career as a gymnast, the All-Around (balance beam, uneven parallel bars, horse vaulting and free exercise), at the North American Gymnastic Meet in Philadelphia.

Bob Beamon, a high school junior from Jamaica, N.Y. who also plays basketball, set a new national interscholastic record of 49 feet 5 inches in the hop, step and jump, bettering the old mark by half an inch, at the Penn Relays at Philadelphia's Franklin Field.

Pam Morris of the San Francisco Merionettes followed her sweep of the U.S. synchronized swimming titles in Houston with three wins a week later at the Canadian champion ships in Edmonton, Alta. She took the solo, figures and overall titles with 242.7 points.

Joe La Motta, the youngest son of ex-boxer Jake, had an undefeated first season on the Norland High (Miami) wrestling team until the state tournament finals when a pulled abdominal muscle forced him to quit in the middle of the second period of his 168-pound bout.
