FACES IN THE CROWD

Jim Griffith, 12, swam to a national age-group record (27.5) in the 50-yard butterfly at the Florida AAU championships in Brandon. Griffith, a Bradenton boy, also set new state freestyle marks at 50 and 100 yards and 50 and 100 meters, plus the 50-meter butterfly.

Sandy Smaha, a high-school cheerleader from Orono, Me., won the girls' slalom water ski title in the North American amateur championships on Lake Placid, N.Y. The victory, and her third in the trick event, gave her second place in the overall scoring.

Louis Stender, a hardware and appliance wholesaler from Charleston, S.C., won the five-race National Y-Flyer sailing championship in Charleston Harbor over 75 skippers from all parts of the country. Stender sailed his boat, Bones, to finishes of 1-4-6-11-1.

Mike Bayus Jr. beat the eight-time winner of the Auburn, N.Y. district golf championship, Mike Bayus ST., to take his first title. Father and son were tied at 214 after 54 holes, but Mike Jr. parred the first hole of the playoff, while his father three-putted for a bogey.

Tony Haberer, 19, of Muleshoe, Texas, was chosen top cowboy of the American Junior Rodeo Association for the second year at the national rodeo finals in Odessa, Texas. He competed in bronc riding—for which he took first place—bull riding and steer wrestling.

Vincent Yardum Jr. captained the Van Nuys (Calif.) backgammon team that won a seven-month-longtournament among seven southern California cities, and took the individual championship as well. He won 15 matches, lost five and averaged 4.38 games won per set.
