Rick Mount, a Lebanon, Ind. high school basketball player who has never, in four years of play, scored fewer than 11 points, surpassed Oscar Robertson's state high school scoring record when he totaled 30 points in an 89-67 win over Crawfordsville High.
Wendy Mairs, a student at Bennett College in Millbrook, N.Y. and a sister of Mary Mairs Chapot of the U.S. Equestrian Team, took the Open Horsemanship championship and the reserve ribbon in the advanced horsemanship class at Bennett's indoor fall horse show.
Richard Hormel, quarterback for Miami (Fla.) High, entertained the largest crowd (44,500) ever to see a southeastern high school athletic contest by throwing touchdown passes of 55 and 40 yards to upset defending national champion Coral Gables 14-7 in the Orange Bowl.
Jack Redeman of Mount Gilead, Ohio, owner and handler of Saighton's Swank, a 3-year-old English springer spaniel, guided his charge through five land and two water tests to the 1965 national amateur championship for springer spaniels at Indiantown Gap, Pa.
John Lawson of Kansas University won the six-mile NCAA cross-country championship race at Lawrence, upsetting favored Doug Brown of Montana in 29:24. Three days later he took the USTFF title in Wichita in 28:50, beating Oscar Moore of Southern Illinois.
Peter Rugg, a Columbia freshman, gained the individual title at the Middle Atlantic Interscholastic Sailing Association's Fall Freshmen championships on Long Island Sound after a series of 12 races in which he took two firsts. The Columbia team also won.
