Bert Life, 56, athletic director at the Toronto YMHA who last won a walking race in 1928 when he was Canadian junior champion, was the handicap winner of the 55th annual 10½-mile Brooklyn Bridge to Coney Island walk, with a total time of 1:56.44.
Andre Gorzynski of Rochester, N.Y. led the Monroe Community College soccer team to an undefeated season and its first National Junior College Soccer Championship while maintaining his two-year average of one goal and one assist per game.
Harold Eis, a Topeka, Kans. auto-parts dealer, beat more than 100 U.S. and Canadian drivers to win the Lake Havasu City (Ariz.) World Outboard Championship for unlimited hydros and catamarans, a six-hour endurance race in which he drove 335 miles at 55.8 mph.
Nicholas Von Baillou of New York, a former Yale oarsman, rowed into a 15-mph headwind and through rough water to win the 2,000-meter junior singles sculling championship of the New York Athletic Club at Orchard Beach Lagoon by 15 lengths.
Joe Emmi, a 170-pound senior newcomer to the first string at Ridley Township High in Folsom, Pa., not only quarterbacked his team to a 10-0 season, but also set state and national prep records for touchdown passes (34) and total yards gained (2,454).
