Paula Kenerva, 13, of Whitefish, Mont. took the giant slalom in 1:55.6, the slalom in 2:00.73 and placed second in the special slalom to win the combined title with 23.10 points at the North American Alpine skiing championships in Franconia, N.H.
Booth Garnett, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound forward on the hockey team at Brunswick School in Greenwich, Conn., scored 96 goals in 35 games during his four-year career for an average of 2.7 per game. Garnett tallied 23 goals this season to lead his team to an 8-0-1 record.
Ginger Powell, a graceful 15-year-old figure skater from the New Haven (Conn.) Skating Club, won both the compulsory-figures and free-skating events to take the senior women's title at the Middle Atlantic championships in New York's Madison Square Garden.
Richard Polk, a senior at Little Rock's Central High, clipped one-tenth second off Richmond Flowers' meet record in the 60-yard low hurdles with a 6.9 and tied the national high school 60-yard high-hurdle mark at the Jaycee Indoor Track Carnival in Memphis.
Jerry Heidenreich, a 16-year-old Dallas swimmer, set two meet records at the Dallas High School Championships when he won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:00.6 and the 200-yard individual medley in 2:08.7. Heidenreich's Hillcrest High team won the title.
Todd Nouse, 16, of Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich. was awarded a berth on the Sir Winston Churchill, a new school ship of Britain's Sail Training Association. He will be the only American in the crew when the Churchill competes in this summer's Tall Ships Race.
