FACES IN THE CROWD

Gerry Walin, 26, a University of Washington student, steered Starflite IV, a 17-foot hydroplane with an Evinrude 100-S motor, to a world outboard-boat speed record of 130.929 mph over a one-kilometer course on Lake Havasu, on the Arizona-California border.

Alison Root, 15, a sophomore at the Germantown Friends School in Philadelphia, who comes from a family of badminton players, rallied to beat Patti Ling of Northville, Mich., for the U.S. 15-and-under girls' junior title in Philadelphia.

Marvin Hildebrand, a 16-year-old junior at Highline High in Seattle, scored a total of 77 points in winning five individual events and the all-round title, as he led his school to its eighth Washington state high school gymnastics championship in the last 10 years.

Ed Siemer, 21, a pitcher for Rollins college in Winter Park, Fla., playing his first baseball game in two years, pinch-hit a grand-slam home run 360 feet over the right-field fence to help his team beat Georgia State College of Atlanta 14-0.

Terry Bradshaw, 17, a senior at Woodlawn High in Shreveport, La., set a national schoolboy javelin record with a throw of 243 feet 7 inches at a meet in his home town. A quarterback at Woodlawn, Terry will enroll at LSU this fall on a football scholarship.

Robert W. Elton, 22, a math teacher at Wilbraham (Mass.) Academy, gained the New England AAU heavyweight power lift championship at Lawrence, Mass. by hefting 330 pounds in the bench press, 460 in the squat and 625 in the dead lift.
