FACES IN THE CROWD

Brent Berk, 16-year-old swimmer from Honolulu's Punahou school, clipped .2 second off the state 100-yard freestyle mark with a 49.3 clocking, then won the 500-yard freestyle and placed second in the 200-yard at the Hawaii AAU senior indoor championships.

Stephanie Forrest, a pig-tailed seventh-grader from Fairhaven Junior High School in Bellingham, Wash., gained her second consecutive victory in the Spearin Cup at Mount Baker when she won the 40-gate giant slalom in 1:19 over 28 other junior competitors.

Don Pierce, a 5-foot 10-inch, 140-pound high school senior from Pittsburg, Calif., high-jumped seven feet in his first try at a dual meet in El Cerrito, Calif., and became only the second schoolboy to scale that height (New Yorker Bill McClellon was the first in 1965).

Paul Apostol, a 20-year-old fencer from East Northport, N.Y., won the individual saber title at the NCAA championship in Durham, N.C. with a 27-1 record to assist his New York University team to its sixth national team championship. Army finished second.

Lee (Corky) Castner, a Washington (N.J.) High senior wrestler who also lettered in football, baseball and golf, won his third straight district title, took the 168-pound class state championship and completed his scholastic career with a 69-6 record.

Scott Farmer, a student at Ventura (Calif.) College, broke five national indoor smallbore rifle records—three in the prone position, standing junior and junior aggregate—with a 1099x1200 score at the Desert Rifle and Revolver Club meet in Victorville, Calif.
