FACES IN THE CROWD

Shaul Ladany, a 30-year-old Israeli graduate student at Columbia University, broke the oldest U.S. track, mark in the books when he won the 50-mile walk at Point Pleasant (N.J.) High in 8:35:35. The previous record of 9:29:22 was set by G.B. Gille in 1878.

Carl Snitkin, 21, a 194-pound Oakdale, Conn. middle heavyweight now stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, broke his own Central U.S. power weight-lifting record when he hoisted 1,420 pounds in three lifts at the 1st Armored Division finals at Fort Hood.

Sue Gossick, a blonde science majorat San Fernando (Calif.) College, scored 433 points to take the national three-meter women's diving title in Mesa, Ariz., as Micki King of Ann Arbor finished second and defending champion Joel O'Connell of Sunnyvale, Calif. third.

Warren Dempsey, a 6-foot 2-inch 200-pound West Point second classman who took All-Mars land honors in lacrosse at Baltimore Polytechnic, scored three goals and gained one assist in leading the Cadets to their 10th straight victory over Princeton, a 12-7 win.

Dick Oakley, a Senatobia (Miss.) High catcher, who also competes in track (undefeated in the 100), hit four home runs in his first six at bats this year. In six games Oakley's batting average was .588, with five homers, 11 RBIs, 13 runs scored and seven stolen bases.

Peter Smith, 21, a Brown University senior who began playing Rugby four years ago, scored 10 points to lead the Bruins to a 17-3 victory over Notre Dame (it was Brown's 26th win in 29 games) and their first Virginia Commonwealth Cup title, in Charlottesville, Va.
