FACES IN THE CROWD

Paul Gerken, a Norwalk (Conn.) High School sophomore who began playing tennis at 7 and became New England junior champion seven years later at 14, defeated Dave Campbell of Hingham, Mass. to win the South Shore Invitational 16-and-under title at Hingham.

Mrs. Margaret Wason, a nursing student at Southern Methodist who began fencing last September, defeated her schoolmate, Jane Albritton, in a fence-off to take the women's foil championship in the college's first intercollegiate fencing meet—the Mustang Invitational.

Don Johnson, a West Point third classman, became Army's first Eastern golf champion since 1945 when he beat Dave Hambley of Penn State two up to take the Eastern Intercollegiate Golf Association's individual title at Springdale Golf Club in Princeton, N.J.

Hortense Wood, a Salt Lake City medical librarian, has been trap-shooting for 20 years and holds the national women's mark of 973 out of 1,000 targets. Last week she won four more trophies—singles, doubles, handicap and overall—at the Golden West meet in Reno.

Rick Riley, a 5-foot 7-inch, 128-pound high school senior from Spokane, broke his own national schoolboy two-mile record of 9:00.1 (set in Pasco, Wash. last month) with an 8:57 clocking despite a 20-mph wind at the All-City prep championships in Spokane.

Jeff Petrie, a triple letterman and honor student at Springfield Township (Pa.) High, won all seven games he pitched this season. In a 7-0 shutout of Chester High, he struck out nine, walked two and hit two singles, a double and a triple in four times at bat.
