Al Filipelli, a 43-year-old Californian who began playing gin rummy 10 years ago, entered his tenth International Gin Rummy Tournament in Las Vegas and finally won, defeating George DeMers of Fridley, Minn. 521-354 in the final for the $17,835 prize.

James Coots, a 1st lieutenant at fort Sam Houston who has been competing in the pentathlon for 2½ years, bettered the American record (which was set by 1964 Olympian James Moore) when he scored 5,249 points in the five events at a meet with Mexico in San Antonio.

Annette Barnard, 26, a Des Moines airline ticket agent, entered her first auto race and, driving her Class C production Alfa Romeo GTZ, gained a victory to become the first woman ever to win a class race at Minneapolis' Land O' Lakes Sports Car Classic.

Frederika Leet, 17, of Weston, Conn., won blue ribbons for the third time this year in both the Maclay and ASH A Medal classes at the Ox Ridge Horse Show in Darien, Conn., to qualify for the National Horse Show and the Washington International this fall.

Tim Danielson, a senior at Chula Vista (Calif.) High, broke a Golden West Invitational track meet record (set by Jim Ryun in 1965) when he won the two-mile in 8:55.4 in Sacramento. Danielson also took the mile and was voted the meet's outstanding performer.

Steve Schultz ended his pitching career at Archbishop Molloy High in Jamaica, N.Y. with 22 wins, no losses, then shut out Cardinal Hayes 1-0 for his team's fourth straight New York City Catholic schools title. Last year he beat Iona Prep 1-0 for the championship.
