Dave George, 8, a shortstop for the Stem-bridge Little League Bears in Essex, Md., made an unassisted triple play. With the score tied 6-6 and the bases loaded, he caught a low line drive, stepped on second, then overtook the runner returning to first. His side won 13-6.
Dorothy Germain, a 19-year-old golfer from Monticello (Ill.) Jr. College, scored a hole in one on her way to the final of the Broadmoor women's invitation amateur in Colorado Springs and went on to win her first tournament, beating Kathy Ahern of Dallas 1 up.
Mike Garibaldi, a Utah University senior, led his Foothill water-polo team to its second straight national outdoor title when he scored with 39 seconds left in the second overtime of the final and beat the Inland NuPike Club 8-7 at Los Altos Hills, Calif.
Donna Schaenzer of Milwaukee, who has been competing in gymnastics for seven years, winning the USGS all-round title earlier this year, took the all-round and placed first in vaulting and floor exercise at the Canadian National Gymnastic Championships in Winnipeg.
Jeff Bannister, a 6-foot-3 University of New Hampshire sophomore, placed seventh when he competed in the national decathlon in Salina, Kans. for the first time. He entered the national pentathlon in Pittsburgh a week later and scored 3,512 points to win the title.
Victor Ratliff, a 16-year-old from Oklahoma City, entered his first world watermelon seed spitting contest in Pauls Valley, Okla. and won the title with a mark of 42 feet 4½ inches. His best effort, however, was in the semifinal when he spat a seed 48 feet 1 inch.
