LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

Over the years this magazine has been privileged to command the services of the most talented sports photographers on earth, but we are forced to concede that they all have lacked one talent possessed by the summertime apprentice who took these sports pictures for The Topeka Capital-Journal. It is a talent that a news photographer facing a deadline might often find useful. If his undeveloped film has to be carried back to the lab on foot, Apprentice Jim Ryun (page 20) can outrun any competitor.

Jim started his photographic career working summers at a printing plant in Wichita three years ago. This, plus the personal interest of Photo Director Rich Clarkson, a frequent contributor to these pages, led to his present summer job on the Capital-Journal, where he is one of two college boys in the photographic department. Jim says it's too early to tell whether he'll pursue photography as a full-time career, but one thing is certain. It has made him far more sympathetic than most athletes to the problems of other photographers who aim their cameras at him.
