Judy Severance, a junior physical ed major at Arizona State University, was the first coed selected for the Women's All-America Collegiate Archery Team three straight years. Besides Miss Severance, two other Arizona State coeds were named to the 1966 team.
Herschel Begley, an unemployed 26-year-old from Detroit, won the $32,000 first prize in the Petersen Bowling Classic when the 1,665 series that he rolled last January 10 was good enough to beat 16,192 hopefuls in the seven-month-long competition.
Francis Hirschy, a 97-pound Staten Island, N.Y. Little League pitcher, tossed five perfect games and six straight no-hitters, struck out 175 batters in 16 games and compiled an 0.10 earned run average to help his team qualify for the regional playoffs.
Cindy Haughey, 12, of Sylvania, Ohio won the one-meter senior women's diving event and finished second in the three-meter dive at the Ohio AAU District Championships in Toledo. Previously Cindy had won the AAU title in her age group eight times.
Wendy Jones, 16, of Hershey, Pa. won the Lake Placid, New York, International Free Skating Championships. She had no score below 5.0 for her four-minute ice-skating program based on content and execution and was the unanimous pick for the gold medal.
Jim Browning, 51, the pro at the Weston (Mass.) Golf Club the past 15 years, shot a six-under-par 138 for 36 holes and gained his first New England Professional Golf Association Seniors' Championship by four strokes at the Riverside course in Portland, Me.
