FACES IN THE CROWD

Dick Miller, 12, of Pomona, Calif., who won the city table tennis championship for 13-and-under early in the summer, turned to lawn tennis and took the 12-and-under singles and doubles titles in neighboring Ontario. He then won two other titles in Pomona.

Gordy Bowers, a Wisconsin law student, spent his spare time this summer making a mainsail for his boat, Sun Dodgers II, in his Minneapolis home. His work paid off when Bowers won the Inland Lake Yachting Association's Class C championship at Oshkosh, Wis.

Barbara Garcia, an eighth-grader at Pojoaque Junior High in Santa Fe, N. Mex., who has been competing in Pojoaque's field-day championship for four years, won the 75-yard dash, the 50, the high jump and broad jump to increase her overall record to 12 firsts.

Randy Gettman, 16, a center fielder on the Fort Morgan (Colo.) American Legion team, had two singles, three doubles and a home run as Fort Morgan beat Colorado Springs twice for the state B championship. In nine playoff games, Randy batted .500.

Bertha Tickey, a grandmother from West Haven, Conn., who has been a Softball pitcher for 19 years, shut out the Orange (Calif.) Lionettes 3-0 to give the Raybestos Brakettes of Stratford their fifth national women's fast-pitch championship in Orlando, Fla.

Ken Engelmeier, 17, a Rockville, Md. golfer, had a good chance to win the boys' open division at Washington's Tournament of Junior Champions last year but had to disqualify himself because of a rules question. This year he came back to take the title.
