FACES IN THE CROWD

Jim Ranger, 27, of Grosse Pointe, Mich., who drives his own hydroplane, My Gypsy, scored 969 points at the Sacramento Cup Regatta to finish the season with 6,651—second to Mira Slovak's 8,021—and likely Rookie of the Year honors in unlimited hydroplane racing.

John M. Michna, a 49-year-old sergeant on the East Douglas, Mass. police force, bettered the listed all-tackle world record for codfish (set by James J. Duggan in Maine in 1960) by 4 pounds 2 ounces, when he caught a 78-pound 6-ounce cod in Massachusetts Bay.

Marilyn Aschner, a freshman at Queens (N.Y.) College who has been playing tennis for six years, beat Nancy Falkenberg of Mary Baldwin College 6-2, 6-1 to take the eastern women's college-tennis championship at Forest Hills for the second consecutive year.

Donal Patrick O'Sullivan, Killarney's All-Ireland Gaelic football player for five years, was flown home from New York, where he is studying for his Master's degree, to play in the County Kerry title game against Tralee. Alas, Killarney lost anyhow, 16-15.

Sebsibe Mamo, an Ethiopian student at Colby College in Waterville, Me., who competed in the 1,500-meter at the 1964 Olympics, clipped 50 seconds off the college's freshman cross-country course record in winning his first race for the Colby harriers.

John Scott, senior quarterback for Catawba College (Salisbury, N.C.) and the most valuable back in the Carolinas Conference last season, broke the conference pass-completion mark by hitting on 34 of 56 attempts for 338 yards in a 24-7 win over Western Carolina.
