FACES IN THE CROWD

Bill Shear, a junior southpaw placekicker for Cortland (N.Y.) State College, set a new national small-college field-goal record when he booted the football 61 yards in the first quarter of the Red Dragons' game against Hobart College. Cortland went on to win 15-8.

Marilyn Calvert, a 12-year-old English schoolgirl, had been riding horses for nine years, but had never competed in a race. She entered the 301-year-old Newmarket Town Plate, England's only race for women and, the youngest jockey ever, came in second on Queen's Tree.

Russell Patrick, a 26-year-old horticulturist from Port land. Me., has been "boiling to race" since he saw his first drag competition eight years ago. This summer he made his debut and won five races in a row to take San-ford Dragway's New England Class L title.

Dee-Dee Gilyard of Waterbury, Conn. rode her aged brown gelding, Gossip, to the junior jumper championship at the Greenbrier Farm Horse Show in Lakeville, Conn., upsetting the favorite, Jacquie Zuccaro's Easy Money, the current leader for AHSA's yearly award.
