Steve Northup, 17, of Pensacola, Fla., set a world endurance record for barefoot water skiing of 67:15.2 on Bayou Texar in Florida. A conventional skier for nine years, but a barefoot boy for just one, Northup had set an American mark of 38 minutes a month earlier.

Kerry Grimes of Oklahoma City, just 13 years old but already a professional for two years, posted a record time of 15.3 seconds for the three-barrel, 450-foot course in Detroit and all but clinched the national cowgirls' barrel-racing season championship.

Bob Fitts, 21, of Cortland (N.Y.) State College, won the individual title in the ninth annual NCAA College Division Cross-country Championship by covering the four-mile course in 19:40.6. He defeated a field of 286 runners representing 61 schools.

Alberta Lee Cox, 35, of Raytown, Mo., was named coach of the U.S. women's basketball team for the Fifth Pan-American Games scheduled for Winnipeg, Man. next summer. She is the first woman ever selected to coach a U.S. team in Pan-American competition.

Wayne Vollmer, 21, a Vancouver, B.C. business-administration major at Arizona State University, won the Arizona State Amateur golf tournament with a 2 and 1 victory over Phoenix public-course player Terry Johnson in a scheduled 36-hole final.

Donnie Krahn, 16, junior halfback for Huntsville (Tenn.) High School, scored 20 points against Jellico (three touchdowns, two extra points), giving him 205 points in 10 games. Earlier he twice scored 50 points in a game, despite playing one of those with two fractured ribs
