FACES IN THE CROWD

Steven Omi, 9, of Berkeley, Calif., who swims, plays baseball and recently took up gymnastics, won the overall title in his division at the Northern California Gymnastics Championships in Sacramento by scoring an unprecedented sweep of all eight events.

Bertha Frank Teague, the girls' basketball coach at Byng (Okla.) High School for the past 41 years (record: 1,127 wins, 88 losses), guided her girls to an undefeated season for the sixth time and to the state championships for the 20th time in her career.

Russell Anderson, 67, a Los Angeles financier who holds the 12-pound test line world record for striped marlin, set a second International Game Fish Association mark when he landed a 292-pound black marlin, also on 12-pound test, at Piñas Bay, Panama.

Anil Nayar, a Harvard sophomore and top-ranked amateur squash player, took his first intercollegiate racquets singles crown by defeating third-seeded Peter Martin of McGill University in Middletown, Conn. Nayar then led Harvard to the four-man team title.

Julie Williams, 8, of Houston, swam faster than all of the older boys and girls at the Dad's Club YMCA Invitational in Houston, to set meet records in the three events that she entered: the 50-yard freestyle (32.7), 50-yard backstroke (39.6) and 50-yard butterfly (38.4).

Vic Landau, a math major at CCNY ranked 21st nationally in table tennis, was named Most Outstanding Player at the Intercollegiate championships in Columbus when he took the men's singles title and teamed with Barry Rost of Cincinnati to win the men's doubles.
