Keith Christmann, a 15-year-old trapshooter from Baden, Pa., gained his first big title when he broke 182 of 200 targets to place first in the open junior division of the North Carolina State Open at the Pinehurst Gun Club. It was the state's biggest trap shoot.
Robin Watson, a sophomore at Crawfordsville (Ark.) High and the state junior girls golf champion, entered the Arkansas High School Golf Tournament in Little Rock—the only girl competitor—and, with Joe Baratti Jr., won the Class A-B title by eight strokes.
John Jones, a track star at Elgin High in Marion, Ohio, competed in the Class A State High School championships in Columbus with the temperature 100° and posted his fourth two-milerecord (9:21.7) in 17 days. His best time, made a week earlier, was 9:13.8.
Cordy Garcia, 31, an Albuquerque, N. Mex. police detective who won the AAU city and state handball doubles titles earlier this year, upset top-seeded Manny Smith, state and city champion for the past nine years, to win the AAU state singles title in Albuquerque.
Jon Matlack, 17, completed his third year as leading pitcher for Henderson High in West Chester, Pa. with a 22-1 record (14 shutouts, four no-hitters, one perfect game, and 219 strikeouts), while his team (14-0 this year) won its 40th straight regular-season game.
Mike Voitich, 62, of Stockton, Calif., a jumping-frog trainer for 25 years, set Tule Jim loose at the Calaveras Jumping Frog Contest I at Angels Camp, Calif., and he leaped a record 19'3½" in the trials. Mike's Sidewinder IV then won the finals with a 17'11" jump.
