FACES IN THE CROWD

Charles Burt, a Harding College (Searcy, Ark.) freshman bowler, won the singles title at the NAIA Tournament in Kansas City, Mo. when he averaged 200 pins for 15 games, then rolled a 232 in a playoff with Jack Connaughton of La Crosse (Wis.) State.

Dan Stubbs, an 11-year-old gymnast from Ardmore, Okla., competed against youngsters almost all older than he at Oklahoma's first Junior Olympics in Bartlesville and became all-round champion with victories in three of his events and seconds in three others.

Barbara Roquemore, 28, of Santa Monica, Calif., beat seven other women and 73 men (including her husband Jerry) in winning overall honors at the Western Skydiving Championships in Henderson, Nev. Barbara took firsts in both accuracy and style.

Ralph Garr, a Grambling (La.) College senior second baseman, led all NAIA batters with a record .585 average, as his team, boasting an unmatched 35-1 regular-season mark and a playoff record of seven homers, finished third in the NAIA championships.

Doug Verdieck, a freshman at the University of Redlands (Calif.) where his father coaches tennis, defeated Vicente Zarazua of the University of Corpus Christi (Texas) 6-4, 6-3 in a final that lasted 43 minutes for the NAIA tennis singles title in Kansas City, Mo.

Barbara Friedrich, 18, competing for the Shore Athletic Club in Asbury Park, N.J., set an American women's javelin record of 198'8" in the Long Branch (N.J.) invitational to better the old mark by 9'4" and beat her nearest rival by over 80 feet.
