FACES IN THE CROWD

Ken Cline, 13, of Lincoln, Neb., who wants to become a sports-car designer when he grows up, drove his flashy blue racer (made to look like an alligator) to a first-place finish at the All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, then was awarded the special trophy for best design.

Doreen Wilber, a 37-year-old housewife from Jefferson, Iowa, became the first amateur ever to score 500 or more points in a women's national field archery tournament when she hit 505 out of a possible 560 at the U.S. championships in Jackson, Miss.

Rick Sloan, a UCLA junior competing in the decathlon for only the second time, set a world decathlon pole-vault record of 16'5" and totaled 7,869—the second best for an American this year—to win the SPAAU Invitational at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif.

Kendall Kessinger, 14, led the Greater Lexington (Ky.) Swim Association to the National AAU women's long-distance team title when she took the three-mile event on Lake Michigan over teammate Paula Crowther and was named the meet's most competitive swimmer.

Zack Willson, a salesman from St, Charles, Mo. who in six years of fly-and bait-casting competition has never finished lower than second in all-round standings, enhanced his record by winning both the distance and accuracy events at the U.S. championships in Nashville.

Inez Sargent, a Texas sharpshooter who attributes her success to the "ability to talk my husband out of the best gun and ammunition," won the Women's National Small-bore Rifle Prone Championship at Camp Perry, Ohio for the third time, scoring 6,388 points.
