FACES IN THE CROWD

Jerry McDermott, 12, a self-taught golfer from Newell, S. Dak. Who took the 1966 and 1967 State Junior titles in his divisions on sudden-death playoffs, won the South Dakota West River junior tournament on the third hole of a playoff with Scott Brandenberg, 17.

Paul Wagner, a sophomore business major at John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Ark., swam the fastest 1,000-yard leg (12:01) on the Golden Eagles' nine-man 100-mile relay team in pacing the marathon swimmers to an unofficial mark of 39:45:26.

Chris Clark, 12, a sharpshooter from Encinitas, Calif., led the Otay (Calif.) West Region champions to the 1967 Winchester Claybird title in West End, Grand Bahama Island, after being high gun for the first half of the tournament and hitting a final 385 of 400.

Diane Byington, a Rialto (Calif.) Road-runner who won seven of nine cross-country races this season, took the¾-mile cross-country event for girls 10-11 at an SPAAU meet near Los Angeles when she took the lead with 50 yards to go and finished in 4:14.

Bill McClard, a 190-pound defensive lineman for the Norman (Okla.) High School Tigers, kicked field goals of 50, 53 and 56 yards within a two-week period, then booted a 31-yarder to finish the season with 4 for 8. McClard also made 18 of 22 conversion tries.

Ken Pasternak, 16, a goalie for the Horace Mann soccer team in New York City who held opponents scoreless in 15 straight games over a two-year span and gave up only three goals overall, guided the Alexandermen to their second Ivy League title with a 9-1-0 record.
