Kathryn Theresa Miner, 9, of Penacook, N.H. won her first sled-dog race—the Massachusetts championships—after only a two-week training period. She drove her father's Alaskan malatmute over the mile course in 2:51.2 to beat 17 others in the junior division.

Dale Cormican, a 23-year-old mechanic from Crookston, Minn., skimmed over the 427-mile course from Winnipeg, Man. to Isle, Minn, in 11:30:31 to win the International Snowmobile Race. Only 14 of the 114 starters finished the grueling event.

Darrell Dunlap, a forward for the Dunbar High basketball team in Dayton, Ohio, stole a pass near his own basket, scored on his close-in shot, then grabbed two inbound passes and tossed them in to score six points in six seconds in a 91-68 victory over Fairview.

Curtis Person, a 57-year-old amateur golfer from Memphis, took the 16th annual Life Begins At 40 tournament in Harlingen, Tex. It was Person's third consecutive title in the club tournament, his 25th victory in the past two years and his 104th lifetime win.

Laurie Quest, a Minnesota high school senior, won a Central District ski meet two days after a cast was removed from an ankle she had broken—playing soccer. In the next two weeks she took a regional event and the Mt. Werner Classic combined title.

James Warren, 30, a drag racer for 14 years, won top fuel honors in the National Hot Rod Association's 8th annual Winternationals at the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds with a top speed of 230.76 mph, an elapsed time of 6.87 seconds on the quarter-mile strip.
