FACES IN THE CROWD

Cherie McDaniel, 16, of Bethel Park, Pa., riding her own horse, Miss Universe, took the Interstate Horse Show saddle seat—for the second straight year—and the Tri-State Association equitation championships to become the first person to take both titles.

Kenny Harkins, 18, of Duluth, Minn., won the national junior ski jumping title at Westby, Wis with jumps of 307 and 285 feet for a total of 208.8 points. Kenny, who has jumped since he was 8, won meets in Michigan and Minnesota preceding the championships.

John Somogyi, 5'11", scored 3,278 points in his four years on the St. Peter's High School basketball team in New Brunswick, N.J. Along with a 33.4-point career average and a single-season record of 1,158 points, John averaged 12 assists and six steals with one game left.

Kris Welshons, 16, of the Santa Clara (Calif.) Aquamaids, won the 1968 National AAU Junior Indoor Synchronized Swimming individual championship at Kearns, Utah with 115.375 points. Kris finished 22 points ahead of runner-up Dottie Selinius.

Phelps H. Swift Jr., 14, the captain and starting center for his Lake Forest (Ill.) Winter Club Bantam Hockey team, led them to the 1968 state championship when he scored 15 goals in the four-game finals, giving him an average for the season of 3.23 goals per game.

Ed Kochakji, of Bergenfield (N.J.) High School, won a state title for the third straight season (123-pound class this year) and his second consecutive Outstanding Wrestler award. Eddie pinned 47 of his last 60 opponents for a three-year career record of 70-2.
