
FACES IN THE CROWD
Vic Ambrose, a 5'9" freshman from New York City who plays second base on the University of Albuquerque varsity baseball team, set an NCAA record for stolen bases with 49. At the same time, Vic-compiled a .406 batting average and hit safely in 32 of 36 games.
Lisa Shefchik, a Duluth, Minn. seventh-grader who began diving one year ago, was the first girl to enter the city junior high school open-diving championship. She scored 68.6 points to win the event over 10 boys, finishing 1.5 points higher than the runner-up.
William Ritch, the lacrosse coach at Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park on Long Island for 18 years, won his 200th game—over Garden City High School, 12-2—against 33 losses and one tie. Ritch's longest winning streak was 91 games, from 1948 to 1957.
Renaldo Brown, a 6'4" junior at Compton (Calif.) High, leaped 7'½" for a national interscholastic high-jump record at the Compton Cup Invitational track meet after spiking himself at 6'7¾". It was one inch higher than Clarence Johnson's 1966 mark.
Debbie Sentney, 15, of Norwood, Ohio, a 124 bowler, said, "I just wanted to make my mom proud of me," after her 485 scratch series (647 with her handicap) took the girls' division of the American Junior Bowling Congress tournament in Cincinnati.
Mike Walker of Alhambra, Calif. won the men's singles and doubles and teamed with Chris Burton to take the mixed doubles at the National Junior Badminton Championships at the University of Delaware in Newark. Miss Burton also swept the ladies' events.
