FACES IN THE CROWD

Tim McLoughlin, 9, playing only the second round of golf in his life, used his driver lo sink a hole in one on the 158-yard fifth hole at the Apawamis Club in his home town of Rye, N.Y., then settled down and on the very next hole shot a more realistic hole in 14.

Kathy Kuykendall, 11, of Houston lost only one set in five straight tennis tournaments, climaxing her streak by winning the singles for girls 12 and under at the Texas Open and then joining Dundee Davis, also of Houston, to win the doubles title.

Tyrone Simmons, who recently graduated from Franklin High School in Philadelphia, won the national foil fencing championship for boys 19 years old and under in Miami, finishing the competition with a record of Seven consecutive victories and no losses

Sharon Callahan, 16, is a high jumper who is coached by her father and who does her practicing right in her own backyard in Whittier, Calif. She has twice cleared 5'7¼" in meets this year, the second-highest jumps by any American girl so far this season.

Mike Proffitt of Ensley High in Birmingham pitched his third no-hitter in three years, and for the third time it was against Minor High School in the county playoffs, which his team took for the third straight time as Mike heat John Carroll in the finals.

John Childs, the track-and-field coach at Sayre (Pa.) High School for the past five seasons and for 13 years before that at nearby Athens High School, has accumulated 201 dual-meet wins, nine losses, two ties, 18 district championships and one state title.
