Tommy Hughes prompted officials at an all-comers track meet in Tucson to limit future competitors to three events apiece after he gained five victories in the 11-13 age bracket. His firsts were in the 50-, 100- and 440-yard dashes and the long and high jumps.

John Koerner, a senior law student at Tulane University, took his third straight National (water ski) Kite Flying Championship in New Orleans by placing first in the slalom event and second to Mike Robertson of Halifax, N.S. in the trick competition.
Vicki Mallea, a 16-year-old junior golfer from Nampa, Idaho took on the best in the state (110 in all) at the Idaho Women's Amateur Championship in Boise and won the crown, defeating three-time champion Virginia Undhjem of Twin Falls in match play.
