FACES IN THE CROWD

Babette Ehemann, 17-year-old Memphis diver, won the Women's Junior National AAA Diving Championship at Memphis, totaling 397.10 points, some 86 more than second-place Pam Drenning. She had won the Tennessee state title for the last five years.

Warren Gerdine, 11, of Killeen, Texas, beat a field of mature competitors in the Alpha Class National Sailing Championship at Stillhouse Lake, Texas. With his sister Virginia, 13, as crew, Warren used a shoestring to patch popped grommets during the races.

Loral Delaney, 30, of Anoka, Minn., won the North American Women's Clay Targets Championship as well as the Introductory Singles, Double AA class and Special Doubles at the Grand American Trapshooting Tournament in Vandalia, Ohio.

Robert L. Born, a farmer and timber cutter, won the World Lumberjack Championship at Hayward, Wis. Born is a modern woodsman and his title came not from chopping but from his skill with a power saw. He defeated 13 entries from five countries.

Midge Daly, a Yarmouth Port, Mass. grandmother, battled for seven hours before boating a 680-pound tuna off Provincetown, Mass. to win the Annual Cape Cod Tuna Club Tournament. Mrs. Daly is the first U.S. woman ever to win a tuna tournament.

Ed Kruer, 45, a machinist who pitches for the Dayton (Ohio) Blatz team, relieved with the bases loaded and none out in the National Amateur Baseball Federation final in Buffalo, N.Y., and pitched four scoreless innings as Dayton came from behind to win.
