William Wertenbaker of Manhattan, a writer on The New Yorker magazine, for the second straight year sailed his dark green 36½-foot gaff-rigged schooner Tyehee to first place in its class, on corrected time, in New York Harbor's annual schooner race.
Cynthia Paquet, of Bath, Me. started swinging a golf club at 12. At 19 she began a four-year reign as champion of the Bath Country Club and has now won the Maine women's amateur title, one-upping her mother, who entered many times but never won.
Harvey Adams, 15, a Herlong (Calif.) High School sophomore fullback, does not play full games because he embarrasses rivals. He once gained 246 yards in eight tries for the JVs and scored five times. In seven games he has 1,287 yards in 54 tries and 26 TDs.
Ron Olson of Brooklyn Center, Minn., secretary of a Minneapolis bowling league, rolled his third sanctioned 300 game, five years to the day after his first. In that span he also has had three unsanctioned 300s. Olson has been bowling 18 years and has a 200 average.
Janet Henry, 15-year-old horsewoman from Tulsa, riding since the age of 6, took the blue ribbon in the national finals of the AHSA saddle-seat competition for riders under 18 at Kansas City. She won two trophies and now has nearly 50.
Rick Bird in ground, a Crow Indian from Big Horn County, Montana, for the third straight year led the Flandreau (S. Dak.) Indian School to a state high school cross-country title. He has won at a mile and 880 yards the past two years.
