Bob Hillgrove, a grocery-store manager who trains 15 miles a day, six days a week, ran 6.25 miles through snow and mud in 29° weather to win the Maine AAU Cross-Country title for the second consecutive year. His time was 34 minutes 59 seconds.

Tom Zara, a senior from Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y., led the Millbrook (N.Y.) School soccer team to its second undefeated season in three years with a record total of 29 goals. He finished his three varsity seasons with an overall total of 55 goals scored.

Ted Pruett, a Memphis banker, won his third state duck-calling championship in six years on the banks of Kentucky Lake, near Paris, Tenn., when he defeated 20 other contestants in the four compulsory calls—hail, lonesome duck, comeback and feed.

Gary Bonner, a 185-pound halfback from Cleveland, set two new Brown University freshman football records with 824 yards gained and 54 points as the Bruin Cubs had their best season in seven years, 5-1. The only loss was to Columbia in the final minutes.

John Call, from McCordsville, Ind., beat 65 other sailors, including the Canadian National champion, to win the Ohio Open Snipe Championship, on Lake Acton near Oxford. He has won four regattas this year, was in the top three in two others.

Jimmy Dietsch, a bowling-alley manager from Silver Spring, Md., earned his sixth No. 1 national duckpin bowling ranking with the highest overall season average in the history of the sport—138-131 for 518 sanctioned league and tournament games during the year.
