
FACES IN THE CROWD
David Eldredge of Atlanta, a senior at Westminster School, broke 50 seconds running the 440 and swimming the 100-yard freestyle, with times of 49.5 and 49.9. A straight-A student, he also got the Atlanta Touchdown Club scholar-athlete award as a halfback.
Mel Davis, a 6'6" senior at Boys' High, averaged 30 points and 19 rebounds per game to lead Boys' to its second straight New York City public school championship. Davis, who scored 35 points in the finals against Martin Van Buren, is both All-City and All-America.
Mrs. Ruby Jenner, housewife, antique dealer and trapshooter from Waupaca, Wis., won the state championship with an average of 93.71% on 3,800 16-yard targets. Her son Rick, 11, shot 89.72% on 1,800 handicap targets and was increased by three yards.
George McGinnis, a 6'7" senior, averaged 32.7 points and 23 rebounds as Indianapolis' Washington High won all its 31 games and the state title. Also an All-America end, George scored 2,079 points to break Oscar Robertson's city record.
Jackie Hogan, 10, of Radnor Woods, Del., who has won 185 swimming awards, set five age-group records in the state meet: 100-yard individual medley (1:12.8), 50-yard freestyle (29.0), 50-yard breaststroke (37.7), 100-yard free (1:02.3), 400-yard free (4:47.5).
Don Benning, 32, wrestling coach at the University of Nebraska at Omaha for six years, was named NAIA Coach of the Year. Benning has had several offers from bigger schools at a higher salary but says, "I don't want to be some big school's showpiece Negro."
