FACES IN THE CROWD

Jackie Mattingly, who holds every girls' running record in Louisville's grade schools, qualified for a second straight year to race in the U.S. Youth Games in Washington. She ran a 27.5 220 and anchored the winning relay team as her school won the city title.

Richard Du Pont, 5, of Chesapeake City, Md., strapped in and using a regulation rod, landed a 51-pound, seven-foot marlin off the coast of Ocean City. "Colt," as he is nicknamed, weighs just 13 pounds more than his catch and is almost three feet shorter.

Marty Willigan, of Amityville, N.Y., was the only U.S. wrestler to win a gold medal in the 11th International Games for the Deaf in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. A 137-pounder from Hofstra U., he earned a career dual-meet record of 44-1-1, losing in the NCAA finals.

Robin Sievers, son of former major league slugger Roy Sievers, is the family's new standard-bearer. He led Hazelwood (Mo.) High to its first state tourney appearance and hit .442 in American Legion baseball to help his team win the St. Louis County championship.

Marilee Allan, 15, of Corona del Mar, Calif., grew up in a home full of sailing champions (her father and two brothers), but with brother Scott in the Navy and Skip competing in England, it was her turn to come in a winner in Newport Harbor's Race Week.

Sue Smith, of Edmonston, Quebec, won nine medals at the Canadian Swimming Championships. While Sue earned two golds, three silvers and four bronzes, her brother George took three seconds off his Canadian record in the 200-meter medley.
