FACES IN THE CROWD

Glenn Gardner, 74, a retired mechanic from Cincinnatus, N.Y. who conceived an ambition to parachute jump during World War I but did not realize it until three years ago, went a step farther and made his first free fall—a 10-second delay from 4,500 feet—on his 22nd jump.

Bobby Kay of Toledo successfully defended his title as senior division champion in the Ohio Public Links golf tournament. Playing on his 52nd birthday he beat his closest challenger by three strokes, helped out by a 25-yard chip for an eagle on a par 5.

Mike Sash, flanker for West Marshall HS in State Center, Iowa, scored 16 touchdowns in his team's first five games this season, five of them in one game, four in another. With Sash accounting for 108 points, the Trojans out-scored their opponents 212-58.

John Reece, senior halfback for Lockett (Texas) High School, averaged 11.1 yards for 33 carries, ran for five touchdowns and two two-point conversions, and returned a kickoff 88 yards for another score as Lockett beat Chillicothe (Texas) High School 46-38.

Dennis Almeida, from New Bedford, Mass., a freshman at Lorain County (Ohio) Community College, set a school soccer scoring record of eight goals and seven assists, as Lorain beat Malone College of Canton, 20-0, an Ohio collegiate scoring record.

Gary Gabelich of Long Beach, Calif. drove his drag-racing hydroplane at 200.44 mph over a quarter-mile water-ski course in Perris, Calif. It was the fastest time ever clocked for a single run, according to the National Drag Boat Associaton.
