John Piscopo Jr. of Tilton, N.H. successfully defended his title as world champion sled-dog racer when, over a period of three days, he covered the 60-mile Laconia, N.H. course in 3:40:04. Piscopo's father, John Sr., was named the best dog handler at the meet.
Diane Hales, a senior at Cal Poly in Pomona, defeated Judy Kelly of California State (Long Beach) 11-8, 11-4 to win the women's National Intercollegiate Badminton Championship. Mrs. Hales was one of more than 50 competitors from 17 colleges.
Doug Pichon, wing for the Cheyenne Mountain High School hockey team in Colorado Springs, Colo., scored a goal at 11:13 in the second period of a game against Air Academy High; then, in the next 15 seconds, he put two more in the net to rout the Kadets 10-0.
Paul Belflower, 13, a junior high and YMCA wrestler from Oklahoma City, capped his season by winning the state junior 108-pound title. He captured six tournament championships for a 25-1 record; the loss was to a 15-year-old high school wrestler.
Larry Baker, a 6'2" junior at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, set five school records in a 91-77 victory over West Liberty State: his 48 points, 22 goals and 42 attempts were all single-game highs, and he set season marks of 532 points in 466 tries.
Joe Story, from Kalani High in Honolulu, was named Most Valuable Player for the third consecutive year after he led his soccer team to a 15-2-2 season by scoring a league-record 21 goals in 14 games. Joe has compiled career records of 35 league and 43 total goals.
