FACES IN THE CROWD

Mel Briggs, of Nashua, N.H., won the high jump, the 220-yard dash and 180 low hurdles to lead his Nashua High School team to its seventh consecutive state track championship, earning the Athlete of the Month award, his second for the year.

Dave Maple, of Niles, Ill., was named outstanding wrestler at the National AAU Junior Olympic Freestyle championships after winning the 143-pound class. He also holds the national Federation prep title and two titles from the Mexican nationals.

Sara James, 13, from Bloomington, Minn., swam the 200-yard individual medley in 2:27.3 for a state and U.S. age-group mark, then set meet records in the 100-and 200-yard free, the 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly, in Austin.

Vickie Williams, 12, of Baltimore, won the Maryland Hula Hoop championship, out-twirling four girls and a boy in the final sequence that included knee-knocker, stork. Hula Hoop, alley-oop, wrap-the-mummy and freestyle, each event lasting two minutes.

Jeff Pointer, 7, from Idaho Falls, Idaho, pitcher for his first-grade baseball team, participated in two triple plays, one of them unassisted, in consecutive innings—giving him a total of five putouts and one assist while fielding only two batted balls.

Doug Verdieck, of the University of Redlands in California, won an unprecedented fourth straight NAIA tennis singles title to lead the team coached by his father to its fifth straight U.S. crown. He also teamed with his brother Randy to win the doubles.
