Sam Gupton, 13, of Durham, N.C., challenged the largest field ever, 260 entrants, and took the 1970 Soap Box Derby in Akron before 73,000 spectators, winning a $7,500 college scholarship awarded by Chevrolet. His time in the final downhill heat was 27.22.

Jim Dodge, 14, won the log-birling championship against 75 contestants with a fast-stepping performance at the annual birling clinic in Lewiston, Idaho, spilling his brother Russ from his perch on their log as it bobbed in the Volmer Bowl Swimming Pool.

Lynne Ellen Burke, 15, of Montgomery, Ala., won three firsts and a second, out of four events at the AAU Senior National Baton Twirling Championships held at the University of Southern Mississippi for the best showing among the 150 girls entered.

Mrs. Rita Willey of Rockland, Maine won the first world's sardine speed-packing title, cutting and squeezing 536 of the silvery fish into 67 cans at a rate of better than one per second. For her effort she got $300 and challenges from sardine stuffers around the world.
