FACES IN THE CROWD

Jeff Wells of Alexandria, Va. was the winning pitcher in one of the longest Little League games ever played (16 innings, 3¾ hours). The Baileys Crossroads righthander struck out five and gave up no hits in the last three innings of his team's 1-0 victory.

Bob Henderson, a senior at the University of Illinois at Urbana, captured the two-mile walk at the National Junior AAU meet in Wantagh, N.Y. in 14:43.2, more than 11 seconds better than the old record of 14:55 set by Steve Hayden three years ago.

Jim Roth, pitching for Holy Trinity in the Holy Name League of Dubuque, Iowa, extended his two-year unbeaten string to 24 games with 14 wins that included two no-hitters, three one-hitters and three two-hitters. His season earned run average was 1.02.

Kevin Murphy, 21, of Kenton, Middlesex, became only the second person to swim the Irish Sea from Northern Ireland to Scotland, covering the approximate 22-mile distance in 11 hours, 21 minutes, just over four hours faster than the previous crossing in 1947.

Peter James of Indianapolis, sailing in a boat crewed by his wife Anne, won the Y-Flyer national championship with a performance that included two first-place finishes, a third and a 12th in the competition among 61 entrants held on Lake Allatoona, Ga.

Randy Graham, 13, shot a hole in one in the St. Louis District Golf Association Father and Son Tournament on the Sunset Country Club's 118-yard 13th, despite a chipped ankle bone that required him to hobble around on crutches between shots.
