FACES IN THE CROWD

Demitrios Konstantinidis of Athens, Greece set school and league scoring records by booting in eight goals as Cate School of Carpinteria, Calif. romped to a 10-1 soccer victory over Ojai Valley. He is also captain of the school's tennis team.

Mark Lambert of Hinsdale (Ill.) High, holder of several national schoolboy swimming marks, won the 6½-mile Sea of Galilee race in Israel in 2:02:29. The only U.S. swimmer ever invited to participate, he lopped 20 minutes off the previous best time.

Marine Major RAY VELASQUEZ of Quantico, Va. was the first U.S. entry to win the Canadian championship in orienteering, a sport that combines crosscountry running and navigation. He covered the seven-mile course 2½ times faster than his nearest rival.

Richie Weaver of PMC Colleges in Chester, Pa., gained 363 yards in 28 carries, only 10 short of the NCAA single-game record, in a 41-12 defeat of Moravian. He scored TDs on runs of 56, 68, 78 and 79 yards and played little in the fourth quarter.

Rich Karrh, 16, who attends Dwight Morrow High in Englewood, N.J., outdistanced 1,800 runners from 250 schools in three states to win individual honors in the New York University interscholastic run. His time over the 2½-mile course was 12:54.9.

Paul Melzer of Philadelphia scored four touchdowns and rushed for 319 yards to lead his Springfield High football team to a 58-8 victory over Upper Merion, avenging last season's 48-6 defeat. Through five games Melzer is averaging 13.6 yards per carry.
