Claude Darears of Quebec City, apparently undaunted by the lack of snow, captured three of five men's events in the Sebasticook Valley Snowmobile Club's New England State Championship Drag Races, held on a grassy course in Newport, Me.
Dom Spagnolo has kicked 43 goals in leading the Rye Neck High soccer team in Mamaroneck, N.Y. to 16 consecutive victories and the Class C state championship. Spagnolo's best performances came with six goals each against Croton and Dobbs Ferry.
Fred Naatz of Joplin, Mo. scored aces on consecutive days at the 136-yard 4th hole of the Schifferdecker Municipal Golf Course. He used a six-iron on both occasions, and the holes in one were the first in 4½ years of golfing for Naatz, who plays to a 15 handicap.
Bill August established four Golden Gate Conference passing records by completing 39 of 61 passes for 619 yards and all six of his team's touchdowns as unbeaten Chabot Junior College in Hayward, Calif. narrowly defeated Foothill College 42-41.
John Small has coached the Taft School cross-country teams in Watertown, Conn. to victory in 41 consecutive meets, dating back to October 1966. A 28-28 tie with Hotchkiss is the only nonvictory over the last four years of New England prep competition.
Curtis Kunkel of Odessa, Texas currently holds two top archery titles, the state young-adult championship won in Abilene and the four-state Southern Sectional crown captured in Oklahoma City. These are among 16 trophies he has won in the last three years.
