FACES IN THE CROWD

Tom Roy, of South Windsor (Conn.) High, scored 39 points to break the New England prep career record of 2,237 points while leading his team to an 88-50 victory over East Windsor. He has averaged 33.5 per game for an unbeaten (20 victories) team.

Tim Staker, a second-year engineering student at Ohio State, won his third straight Ohio Intercollegiate Men's Slalom race, each time skiing for a different college. In 1969 he attended Miami of Ohio and last year he was enrolled in the Mansfield branch of OSU.

Tom Bassler Jr., 7, of Palos Verdes, Calif. completed a 26-mile marathon race at Anaheim. He was among the 240 finishers out of 310 starters. For his five-hour, 40-minute feat, the second-grader received a trophy, tickets to Disneyland and a Mickey Mouse watch.

Susan Gilman, of Nashua, N.H., received her third Dog World High Score Trophy at the Westminster Kennel Club Show in New York for the junior handler with the most first-place awards in the country last year. She led 17,000 junior entries with 26 firsts.

Steve Whedbee, a 136-pound wrestler for Fairfield (Calif.) High, has pinned 37 of 58 opponents this season, a national prep record for pins in one year. The 5'10" senior's 57-1 mark includes nine tournament titles. Over three years, his won-lost record is 123-13.

Roscoe Pondexter, a 6'6" forward for San Joaquin Memorial High in Fresno, Calif., has broken the state prep career-scoring record of 1,917 points. Hitting 29 points in San Joaquin's 77-37 win over Reedley last week, he reached 2,221 for his four seasons.
