Paul Kubinski, a 5'11" guard on the Parkland High basketball team in El Paso, scored 72 points to dominate a 102-34 victory over Fabens High. Paul made 24 of 25 free throws. He scored in double figures in every game for the last two years.
Randy Faires, a 134-pound wrestler at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga who has never lost a varsity match, decisioned Mike Barrett of LSU 14-5 in the finals of the Southeastern Intercollegiate tournament for his 100th straight win in high school and college.
Bill Clark of San Jose, Calif., in a two-hour run at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills, established five American records: 15 miles (1:17:53.4), 25 kilometers (1:20:42.8), 30 kilometers (1:37:33.0), 20 miles (1:44:56.4) and two-hour run (22 miles, 1,254 yards).
Tori Haines, a 7th-grader in Anchorage, Alaska, outperformed 81 girls to win the state senior gymnastics championship. She accumulated 46.9 points out of a possible 80 to edge runner-up Roxy Knecht, who had 46.35. Tori's sister Becky won in the junior division.
Carol Thesieres of Bala-Cynwyd, Pa., after seven unsuccessful tries, finally won the U.S. Women's Squash Racquets Singles championship, defeating Canadian champ Marigold Edwards of Pittsburgh in the finals 15-13, 15-8, 15-9 at Princeton, N.J.
Jeff Requarth of Oakwood High in Dayton had his finest hour as his team edged nearby Tipp City 73-71. He connected on all 14 of his field-goal attempts, including the winning basket in the last three seconds, scored 33 points and grabbed 21 rebounds.
