Rita Wiggs, a senior at Cape Fear (N.C.) High School, was named to Fayetteville's All City-County basketball team. She is the first girl in the state to be selected to a heretofore all-male all-star squad, having led her girls' team to two district championships.
John Mills, a junior at the University of Houston, formerly a high school champion in Maine, shot a nine-under-par 279 at the GAC Intercollegiate Golf Classic in Cape Coral, Fla., breaking Steve Melnyk's record of 282. Mills had rounds of 71-69-68-71.
Jim Howard, 17, of Arcadia High, Scotts-dale, Ariz., threw the high school discus 201'7" at Antelope Valley (Calif.) College, three inches farther than the official national mark. He also tossed the collegiate discus 173'6", second longest throw by a prep athlete.
Marcel Dionne, center for the St. Catharines Black Hawks of the Ontario Hockey Association Junior "A" League, won the scoring title a record second consecutive year with 62 goals and 81 assists. In three seasons he accumulated 441 points.
Jim Goodrich, a guard for United Community (Iowa) High, completed his career with 2,213 points in 74 games to become the leading scorer in Iowa prep basketball history. He averaged 38 points this year and led his team to an undefeated regular season.
Frank Velasquez, 98-pound senior wrestler at Racine (Wis.) Washington Park High, gained his third straight state championship in the same weight class, a first in Wisconsin. Overcoming elbow injuries in the last month, he ran up an 84-2 career record.
