FACES IN THE CROWD

Carol Ann Ruud, 14, of Waterville, Wash., completed her second undefeated sled-dog racing season. Sharing honors was her team of three Alaskan Huskies, led by Judy. In the Pacific Northwest Championships she achieved a 3½-mile heat record of 11:28.

Deena Deardurff, 14, of Wyoming Junior High in Cincinnati, won the 100-yard butterfly in the AAU Short Course Indoor Championships in U.S. record time (for women) of 57.06, thus clinching a spot on the U.S. team for the Pan-American Games in August.

Wally Nagao, 39, became the first Hawaiian to shoot a perfect score in an official archery tournament. He scored 560 with 112 consecutive bull's-eyes in the hunters round event of an Armed Forces tournament near Honolulu. He shot at distances of 11 to 70 yards.

Jeromee Liebenberg of Western Michigan University set a new NCAA 3,000-meter steeplechase record of 8:32.2, breaking the previous mark by six seconds at the Dogwood Relays in Knoxville, Tenn. His time was the fastest ever by a U.S. collegian.

Emile Rossouw, 6'4" 17-year-old South African high jumper, Fosbury-flopped to 7'2" at the National Athletic Championship in Pretoria. His jump set a new record for the continent and places him among the world's top 10 high jumpers for 1971.

Bob Caldwell, a junior at Trotwood-Madison (Ohio) High, made a hole in one on the 130-yard par-3 4th hole at the River Bend Golf Course in West Carrollton and went on to a school record of 34 on the par-36 front nine, despite a double bogey on the first hole.
