FACES IN THE CROWD

Joan Pavelich, 18, of University Hill (Vancouver) Secondary School, won the discus throw at the Mount San Antonio Relays at 169' 7½", breaking by 2" the meet record for the women's discus and setting a new Canadian record. She was second in the shotput.

Chris Serino, a shortstop at American International College in Springfield, Mass., has lifted his batting average to .475 from the school's seasonal record of .403 he hit last year. An all-round athlete, Serino is the football quarterback and left wing in hockey.

Karen Kessick, a senior at Marshall University in Huntington, W. Va., aced the first hole of golf she ever played, the 165-yard No. 1 on the Glenbrier Club's par-3 course. It was the first time she had hit a regulation ball rather than the plastic practice variety.

Aron Stewart, a sophomore forward at Essex County (N.J.) College, led the nation's junior-college basketball players with 1,019 points and a 36.6 average. He was named to the first squad of the NJCAA All-America team and to the regional all-star squad.

David Schumacher, 14-year-old freshman at Cathedral Prep High School in Erie, Pa., scored 101 goals, including 14 hat tricks, and 72 assists for a grand total of 173 points while playing Erie youth league hockey during the 1970-71 season.

Robin Evans, 16-year-old high-schooler from Carroll, Iowa, was listed the ninth-fastest U.S. woman miler in 1970 by Women's Track & Field World. Recently she finished second to Barbara Lawson, the collegiate champion, at the Drake Relays in 4:59.4.
