FACES IN THE CROWD

Robert Buccino, 12, a pitcher and catcher for a North Edison (N.J.) Little League team, batted .649 in his first 25 games and leads the league in RBIs (40), homers (10) and runs (35). He has a 9-1 pitching record, including three no-hitters and three one-hitters.

Jimmy Trenz, a freshman from Oceanside, N.Y., was the leading player on the Penn State varsity lacrosse team. An attackman, he scored 28 goals and 22 assists for 50 points and was named to the NCAA's Central Atlantic Division all-star team.

Russ Roberts, 16-year-old sophomore at Azele (Texas) High School, won the pole vault in the regional class AAA meet in Fort Worth with a 15-foot jump and cleared 15 again in the state meet, having improved more than a foot a year for five years.

Marcel Goldfarb, of Brooklyn, the No. 1 singles player for the Tilden High School handball team and the junior national champion, was undefeated in three years of PSAL play, compiling a 59-3 overall record. He led Tilden to its second city title in three years.

John Whitlinger, 17, a junior at Shattuck High in Neenah, Wis., won the USLTA interscholastic singles title after going undefeated in 80 high school matches and five in the tournament. He also recently won his third state high school title in three tries.

John Slaughter, of Nashville, set 13-year-old U.S. records in the 3,000 meter (9:28), three-mile (15:38), 5,000-meter (16:22.6) and 10,000-meter (34:09.6) runs, and world age-group records in the two-mile (10:11) and six-mile (33:01.9).
