FACES IN THE CROWD

Jim Shaw, a 36-year-old bowling-lanes manager from Columbus, Ohio, broke the city's three-game record by 27 pins when he bowled a 297-258-288—843. He had 31 strikes out of a possible 36 en route to the highest ABC score in the nation during the 1971-72 season.

Brian Buckley, the quarterback for the Marblehead (Mass.) High freshman team, threw three touchdown passes in a 26-21 win over archrival Swampscott to increase his career total to 73. In five years of organized football he has led his teams to a 41-1 record.

Fran Verdoliva, a sophomore from the State University of New York at Oswego, won the state cross-country championship with a time of 24:41 on the 4.65-mile course in Troy. Verdoliva was first in all 10 of Oswego's meets, setting three course records.

Don Heater, a tailback for Montana Tech, set two NAIA season records with 319 carries for 1,797 yards and led the NAIA with 158 points. His 179.7-yard-per-game-average paced Tech to an undefeated Frontier Conference record and a 9-1 overall mark.

Elson Seale, a junior at Columbia High, Maplewood, N.J., set a state soccer scoring record with 10 goals in a 17-0 win over Weequahic of Newark. He scored 35 goals in 14 games this season and has totaled 57 in two seasons of varsity competition.

Jerry Glenn, 43, of the New York Athletic Club, had a 9-0 record in round-robin competition to gain the National Invitational Three-Cushion Billiards championship in Minneapolis. It was his fifth victory in the last seven years and fourth in a row.
