FACES IN THE CROWD

Ian McCallum, of Cape Town, South Africa, scored 20 of his club team's 28 points to lead Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa to the national collegiate rugby championship with a 28-17 come-from-behind victory over the Naval Academy.

Diane McMullen, a junior at Colorado State University, averaged more than 193 pins over nine games in winning the singles and all events at the Association of College Unions Intercollegiate Women's Bowling Championships in Kansas City, Mo.

George Sutherland, a 225-pound senior at Port Townsend (Wash.) High, competing in the state high school indoor championships, put the shot 60'5", nearly six feel farther than the previous state record. In dual meets he also has won the 100 and 220.

Phil Cox sang the national anthem before the largest basketball crowd in Indiana history, then led Connersville High to its first state title. A third-place finisher in the state high jump last spring, he has been named "Mr. Basketball" as Indiana's top player.

Alden (Jinx) Johnson (left) and Jackson H. Bowling, both of Buffalo, upset defending champions William T. Ketcham Jr. and Howard A. Davis Jr. to win the U.S. National Men's Senior Squash Racquets Doubles 11-15, 15-9, 15-7, 17-16. Earlier in the year Johnson was runner-up in the U.S. National Senior Singles and also in the Canadian National Senior Singles, which he lost to Bowling. Johnson was captain of the University of Michigan tennis team in 1943 and 1944, while Bowling captained the basketball team at Hobart in 1937-38.
