FACES IN THE CROWD

Allan Van Nostrand has coached the high school varsity tennis team in Bay Shore, N.Y. to 137 straight wins, including sectional playoffs, over the past seven years. The junior varsity, guided by his brother King, has won 120 matches in a row since early 1964.

Kathy Jones, a Sophmore at Band (Texas) High, won the triple jump (37'8"), the 60-yard dash (7.1) and the high jump (5'5"), and placed second by an inch in the long jump to score all of her school's third-place total of 38 points at the state championships.

Curtis Crawley, 12, of Griffin, Ga., pitched a 27-1 no-hitter in a Little League game, striking out 17 of 19 batters. What's more, he also went 5 for 6 at bat, hitting two doubles and three home runs, including a grand slam, and totaled 11 runs batted in.

Carlin Thompson, a senior at Ada (Okla.) High, won the 220-yard dash (22.2) and the 440 (48.0) for the third straight year and anchored the victorious 440 and mile relay teams in leading his school to its fourth Class 3A state title in a row.

Mark DiGirolamo, a Santa Cruz (Calif.) High senior wrestling in the 123-pound class, won his fourth consecutive Northern California Invitational championship. In four years of varsity wrestling he never lost a match in a dual meet and posted a 148-3-2 record.

Dave Croasdale, a junior at Manchester (N.H.) Memorial High, an All-State halfback in football and an outfielder on last year's state championship baseball team, scored nine hat tricks and led the Crusaders to second place in the state hockey tournament.
